The Collection at RiverPark is West Ventura County’s premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination in Oxnard, California. Its developers invested $1 million in public art. OTL designed and built three of the property’s signature water features, each inspired by the sea, lightning and lava.
PROJECT
CHALLENGE
The developers wanted the art and water features to work together as true placemaking, drawing families back again and again. Each fountain needed to support a distinct vision, from Peter Shire’s twisting mermaid weathervanes to Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend’s leaping steelhead trout sculpture. The plaza fountain called for illusions of lava and lightning convincing enough to feel natural.
OTL’S
SOLUTION
OTL built the Mermaid Fountain around Shire’s weathervanes, pooling arching streams into a colorful mosaic tile basin. For the Coastal Conversion Fountain, OTL integrated Stinsmuehlen-Amend’s leaping trout and glass spheres into a pool that appears to transform a fishing net into river reeds. At the plaza fountain, OTL used fog and programmable LED lighting to create illusions of flowing lava and ground lightning.
The Collection at RiverPark’s water features remain lasting focal points, delighting visitors and reflecting the developers’ art-driven vision. The project went on to win two ICSC MAXI Awards, in 2014 and 2015.
