Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania spans 1,083 acres of outdoor gardens and an indoor conservatory holding 5,500 types of plants, drawing visitors to hundreds of performing arts events staged among its fountains each year. OTL served as technical consultant on the historic renovation of its Main Fountain Garden, working alongside a general contractor world-renowned water feature designer.

CHALLENGE
The renovation needed to modernize and reinvigorate one of the world’s most notable water gardens without losing its original character, all while restoring 4,000 pieces of carved Italian limestone and building roughly 1,400 feet of underground tunnels beneath the site.
OTL’S
SOLUTION
OTL helped bridge the gap between the designer’s vision and’s execution, ensuring the design team’s intent carried through to the finished feature. The completed Main Fountain Garden now includes 1,340 new jets and streams, 30 new flame nozzles and 1,389 new LED lights, all engineered to work in concert.
The result earned Longwood Gardens a 2018 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Award, a 2018 ASLA Design Award and recognition among ENR MidAtlantic’s 2018 Best Projects, upholding its standing as one of the world’s premier water gardens.
