At Fashion Valley Mall, owner Simon Property Group was midway through a multi-phase, multi-million-dollar renovation turning a traditional open-air mall into a mixed-use destination with new retail space and luxury residences. OTL was called in to redesign and refurbish two architectural fountains on the property, one near Macy’s and one near Bloomingdale’s, each reimagined to evoke San Diego’s easygoing coastal lifestyle.
Now, both fountains anchor the mall’s new identity as a true lifestyle destination.
PROJECT
CHALLENGE
Simon Property Group needed the renovation to continue without interrupting daily shopping, so construction on both fountains had to happen at night while the mall stayed open during the day.
One fountain also revealed discrepancies between its as-built documents and the actual vault pipelines beneath it, while the other faced budget constraints on a renovation that turned out to be far more extensive than planned. Sourcing the exact tile color envisioned for one of the fountains added yet another hurdle.

SOLUTION
OTL devised a nighttime construction schedule that kept both fountains protected and out of sight during business hours, so shoppers experienced no disruption to their day.
When discrepancies surfaced between the as-built plans and existing vault pipelines, OTL worked directly with the general contractor to resolve the issue and keep the project on schedule.
The team also tracked down the exact tile color the design called for and adapted the scope of the more extensively renovated fountain to fit its budget, delivering both projects to the client’s satisfaction.
These two refreshed fountains now serve as aesthetic focal points at Fashion Valley Mall, adding to the visitor experience throughout the property. Together, they capture the blend of nature and modern design at the center of this transformation, giving Fashion Valley Mall a renewed sense of place that reflects San Diego itself.
