At City Creek Center, water does double duty as spectacle and storytelling. OTL built the “Flutter” fountain and three linear fountains lined with 108 arching nozzles at the retail center’s north entry, along with a 1,200-foot creek winding through its heart.
That creek recreates the south fork of historic City Creek, a waterway that once ran straight through downtown Salt Lake City.

CHALLENGE
City Creek Center needed water features that could hold two very different moods at once: a lively, showpiece fountain and a quiet, naturalistic creek running through the same retail destination.
Choreographing 108 arching nozzles into a fountain graceful enough to form the shape of dancing bells added its own layer of complexity. The creek carried its own demands, recreating a piece of Salt Lake City’s lost waterway convincingly enough to support live Utah trout.

SOLUTION
OTL built the “Flutter” fountain alongside three linear fountains, their 108 arching nozzles choreographed into a ballet of dancing water that forms the shape of bells at the center’s north entry.
Running the length of the property, a 1,200-foot creek recreates the south fork of historic City Creek, complete with two 18-foot waterfalls cascading over natural Utah sandstone boulders.
A portion of that creek was stocked with indigenous Utah trout, turning a decorative water feature into a living habitat.
Shoppers and diners at City Creek Center now move between two distinct water experiences in a single visit, from the playful choreography of dancing fountains to the calm of a flowing, trout-filled creek. Together, they give the center a sense of place tied directly to Salt Lake City’s own history.
