Blackhawk Plaza pairs Mediterranean village-style architecture with an aquatic courtyard at its center, giving shoppers a landscape as memorable as the storefronts around it. OTL brought that courtyard to life with real and artificial rock and a range of water features, from meandering streams to sculptural fountains.
Now, water sets the tone for the entire retail experience, guiding visitors from one gathering point to the next.

CHALLENGE
Ownership envisioned a courtyard that felt more like a Mediterranean village than a shopping center, built entirely around water. That meant balancing very different water experiences: soft, organic streams and waterfalls alongside sculptural, formal architectural fountains, all within one cohesive space.
A half-acre koi pond added another layer of complexity, requiring habitat conditions healthy enough to support fish over the long term.

SOLUTION
OTL combined real and artificial rock with a full range of water features, from organic pools, streams and waterfalls to formal architectural fountains that reach skyward.
At the center of it all, a half-acre koi pond anchors the courtyard, its water clear and pure enough to sustain a thriving aquatic habitat.
Each feature was designed to work in concert, so the transition from natural rockwork to polished stone fountain feels seamless rather than abrupt.
Water now defines the shopping experience at Blackhawk Plaza, drawing visitors from one gathering point to the next across the courtyard. The half-acre koi pond and towering fountains remain the center’s signature, quiet proof that elegance and nature belong in the same courtyard.
