The Collection at RiverPark
Oxnard, California
Art and nature intersect in the stunning water features of The Collection at RiverPark, West Ventura County’s premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination.
OTL’s work on this project encompasses three enchanting fountains inspired by the ethereal spirit of mermaids, the sea, powerful lightning, and volcanic lava.
The Collection features several public art installations – the visionary result of developers Shea Properties and CenterCal Properties, LLC’s $1 million investment to bring national and internationally recognized artists together to create an inspired grouping of public art pieces.
From playful fountains and benches to colorful ceramic tile murals, metal sculptures, and more, the developer understood early on the power of art in placemaking.

IDEA
Where Art Meets Nature
The Collection at RiverPark was developed by a partnership between Shea Properties and CenterCal Properties, LLC, with architecture by Altoon and Porter, landscape architecture by SWA Group, and general contracting by VCC. Water features were designed and built by Outside the Lines, Inc. (OTL)
OTL’s work at The Collection encompasses three standout pieces that today serve as focal points for the development, including:
The Mermaid Fountain: Sculpted by Peter Shire, whose artwork often defies categorization and crosses over traditional boundaries and media, The Mermaid features a series of stainless-steel mermaid weathervanes twisting in the breeze and catching the light above several arching crisscrossing streams of water that pool into a rectangular, colorful mosaic tile basin.
Coastal Conversion Fountain: Sculpted by Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend, whose work in glass and mixed media is featured in many private collections and public institutions throughout the world, the Coastal Conversion features a school of steelhead trout leaping from a fishing net floated by blue-green spheres enclosed and submerged in water. The net appears to open, transforming into river reeds, with leaping trout and streams of water that fall gently into a bubbling reflective pool.
Plaza Fountain – Inspired by the power of nature, the plaza fountain is an entertainment gathering spot for families to interact with water, motion, and light.
Using fog and programmable LED lights, OTL was able to create powerful illusions signifying lava flowing or ground lightning that delights local families and visitors, enticing them to return again and again.

The project won two ICSC MAXI Awards – one in 2014, and again in 2015.
