Grand Park
Los Angeles, California
It had cameo appearances in the movies “Pretty Woman” and “500 Days of Summer,” and now, the restored Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain has a starring role in Los Angeles’ Grand Park.
Outside the Lines, which reconstructed the 1960s-era fountain with joint venture partner Raymond Group, restored and re-energized the fountain to create an interactive gathering place highlighted by water shows with synchronized colored LED lights.
The new water feature has two separate closed-loop water systems. The upper system features a 50-foot spray of water that shoots upward in the original fountain bowl. During the day, visitors enjoy splashing in its lower membrane pool, where water flows across 6,200 square feet of dark granite.
When the sun goes down, the lights go up on the entire fountain, displaying a captivating rainbow of colors.

IDEA
For decades, the heart of Los Angeles’ Civic Center was a collection of parking lots and odd-lot dirt patches ignored by thousands of commuters on their daily commute and retreat to the suburbs.
Even the iconic, art deco-inspired Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain was obscured by concrete parking ramps.
But a plan emerged to take this city gem out of the shadows and let the fountain provide light for an urban gathering place where Angelenos from all walks of life come together to celebrate, relax and enjoy life.
