Stunning Architectural Fountain Adds Beauty and a Sense of Place to Southern California Lifestyle Center

In October 2019, Long Beach, California welcomed 2nd & PCH, a brand-new coastal contemporary retail and restaurant destination developed by CenterCal Properties.

Inspired by its coastal location, the 11-acre lifestyle center features numerous retail shops, fitness studios, eateries, and wellness shops that attract local residents and visitors alike, as well as a spectacular fountain designed and built by OTL.

The fountain’s centerpiece is a spherical sculpture created by artist Ivan McLean, while the water feature’s exterior is finished with a bespoke glass mosaic tile that perfectly complements the project’s sunny Southern California environment.

IDEA

OTL was tasked with delivering a water feature that is both artistic and functional to serve as an eye-catching gathering spot for guests at the new retail destination. OTL was able to present numerous design versions with creative suggestions to help accommodate the budget while staying true to the project vision.

Working closely with CenterCal as well as the landscape and project design team Architects Orange and general contractor W.E. O’Neil Construction Company, the team devised an approach for the project allowing for plumbing and conduits to be installed between the equipment room and fountain location even before the fountain concept was finalized, enabling the building foundations to be constructed without any adverse schedule impacts.

Another challenge was preventing a loud, splashing effect as the water flowed over the bowl edge of the fountain. To solve this while retaining the smooth sheet of water the owners envisioned, OTL designed a custom detail for the bowl edge that quieted the water while preserving the fountain’s visual impact.

 

IMPACT

The 22-foot-diameter fountain at 2nd & PCH is the centerpiece of this destination retail and dining mecca in one of Long Beach’s most attractive locales.

The custom mosaic tile provides a gorgeous encasement for the majestic fountain’s exterior. Topped by a dramatic sculpture, the fountain is perfectly accented at night with soft uplighting, welcoming guests and serving as a landmark within the new outdoor center where crowds will meet, rest, recharge, and delight in the sheer beauty of this center and its public areas year-round.
