In the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Grand Park’s restored Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain anchors what was once a stretch of parking lots and vacant land into a lively civic gathering space. OTL reconstructed the art deco-inspired, 1960s-era fountain into an interactive water show synchronized with colored LED lighting.

CHALLENGE
For decades, the fountain sat hidden behind concrete parking ramps, cut off from the commuters who passed it every day. Los Angeles wanted to bring this civic landmark back into view and turn it into a true gathering place for the surrounding Civic Center.
OTL’S
SOLUTION
OTL rebuilt the fountain’s two closed-loop water systems: an upper system that sends water 50 feet into the air within the original fountain bowl, and a lower membrane pool where water flows across 6,200 square feet of dark granite into which visitors can wade. Synchronized colored LED lights transform the entire fountain into a rainbow display after dark.

Grand Park’s fountain has since won the Downtowners of Distinction award twice, drawing Angelenos of all ages to splash, gather and celebrate in a corner of downtown once defined by parking lots.
