From Cancer to Racecar Driver: The Amazing Story of Gabe Tesch

Posted in Insights -

At OTL, we have always celebrated people who overcome tremendously difficult challenges and go on to live inspirational lives. One of those people is Gabe Tesch, an extraordinary young man who has beaten childhood cancer and then followed his dream of becoming a professional racecar driver. We have supported Gabe for many years and are simply in awe of him. Recently, Gabe shared with us a bit more about his story:

Two years after my battle with cancer, I was declared cancer-free and granted a Make-A-Wish trip to the F1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. I came home a changed kid—not just inspired but determined. Sitting at the airport, I turned to my parents and declared, “I’m going to be a race car driver.”

Their response? Laughter. I mean, fair enough—I was 13, fresh off the thrill of seeing my heroes race at 200+ mph. But I doubled down: “No, I mean it. God didn’t get me through cancer just so I could live an ordinary life. I’m meant to do something extraordinary.”

And that’s how the adventure began.

My dad, who has always been my biggest supporter, got me a go-kart. At 14 years old, I entered my first race. I was pumped, ready to dominate. Reality? Dead. Last.

Then came my first win. And another. And another. Before I knew it, I was on an eight-race winning streak, and by the end of the season, I had won the local championship. The same kid who couldn’t even finish a race was now leading the pack.

Looking back now, I realize that starting at the bottom was a blessing. It taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of humility, and the joy of progress.

Fast forward six years, and I found myself standing on the grid in England, racing a Formula Ford on some of the most legendary tracks in motorsport history—the same circuits my heroes raced on: Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington Park. Tracks I’d only ever seen on TV or dreamed about while sitting in school.

It was surreal, to say the least. The kid who once finished last in a local go-kart race was now competing on Grand Prix circuits halfway around the world.

But honestly, I was proud to have earned my place in the Formula Ford family. The people I met in England felt like a second family to me. They pushed me harder than ever, taught me lessons I’ll carry for life, and gave me memories I’ll never forget.

Next up? I’ve got something exciting on the horizon. I’ll be sharing all about my recent test in a Porsche soon—stay tuned for all the details.
