Civic Park – Downtown Los Angeles, California
Posted in News -
If you live or work in downtown Los Angeles, or have visited the area recently near Music Hall and the Civic Center on Grand Avenue, there’s a good chance you’ve noticed a large construction project underway. With the groundwork starting in 2010, Civic Park is a $56-million downtown renovation project designed to bring a community atmosphere to downtown Los Angeles and make the city greener and easier to use.
Dirt and concrete may be what you see as you cruise down Grand Avenue, but in June, the construction zone will turn into a play zone. The Civic Park component of the Grand Avenue Project is envisioned to become a new landmark stretching from the Music Center on Grand Avenue to City Hall on Spring Street. The 12-acre park is set to accommodate as many as 20,000 people for massive gatherings, such as festivals, concerts and rallies. Downtown residents will be able to gather in the coffee shops, art studios or dog running tracks as they enjoy the new welcoming and distinctly urban oasis.
Some of the features from the original park, such as the large iconic fountain, will stay, however its once aesthetic view will soon become an interactive site to see.
Outside the Lines’ team of themed construction practitioners and water feature designers were called upon to turn the historic Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain into an interactive water feature with illuminated cascading jets that rise and fall playfully into the new shallow pool for all to enjoy.
The new Civic Park will include a small performance lawn, a community terrace planted with drought-tolerant native vegetation and a grand event lawn. The new park will also allow for a strong visual and physical connection for pedestrians from Grand Avenue via a series of stairs, accessible ramps and sloped walkways.
In just a few months, on what should be a warm June morning, the upgraded Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain will once again be turned on, ceremoniously marking the opening of the new Civic Park.
